Welcome to the 8 and Under (8U) section of the Bedford Katonah Hockey Association (BKHA) website.

Our goal as an organization is to teach and grow youth hockey through the American Developmental Model (ADM) of USA Hockey. The ADM is USA Hockey’s nationwide player-development program for youth hockey associations. It’s based on age-appropriate, age-specific competition and training for boys and girls, beginning with their first steps onto the ice and carrying them through age 18 and beyond. The ADM places a heightened emphasis on skill development and long-term athlete development principles, providing a blueprint for the best possible youth hockey experience.

How old does my child have to be to play hockey?
5 years of age as of the year entering the program is the recommended age for children who are entering the program for the first time.  For those that are age 4 and have skating experience may apply. If your child is brand new to skating (regardless of age) we recommend that the child start in a learn to skate program.

If your child turned 9 before December 31st, of the current year, they must play 10U Squirts (boys) or 10U (girls).  8U is only for those who are 8 or under as of January 1st of the current year.

Does my child have to know how to skate to participate in the program?
Yes, our Mite program is designed to teach all kids the fundamental skills that are required to play the sport of hockey. Skating is the most important skill and is heavily emphasized throughout the 8U programs.  While the program is designed for players with very little hockey experience we will require that your child must be able to stand up unassisted, skate forward the width of the ice and turn around.

There is a very good program (unaffiliated with BKHA) offered through the Harvey School at our home rink in Katonah.

Do I need full hockey equipment?

Yes all players must have full hockey gear.

The last requirement is that all players and parent must be willing to have fun learning hockey!
